Database Opening as Read Only

I have a split access 2003 database (fe/be) that works fine for most
users, but there are a handful of people for which the db appears to
be opening read only and they are unable to edit any records. Other
users are able to open the database and edit without a problem. So
it's not a question of who opened the database first, or where in the
country they are located.
DB has record only locking, and refresh and retry settings are still
at default. We've verified they have the same access to the server
locations as everyone else.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Not sure if these comments will help, but here goes.
Is there an error or status bar message generated when they try to edit?
Has security been implemented in the BE?
When you say that these users have the same 'access' to the server
locations, does that mean they also have the same permissions to those file
locations?
