Deleted messages reappearing in Inbox

I have a user on Outlook 2003 that is trying to trim down his Inbox (in
excess of 1400 messages). Intermittently when he deletes a group of
messages, duplicates of those messages will appear in his Inbox. Initially I
noticed that Outlook was set to leave copies on the server. I turned that
option off and cleared the messages off the server, but the problem persists.
Any ideas?

Okay, scratch this one. Little bit of user error on his part. While
selecting his messages to delete, he was accidentally dragging the mouse
before letting go of ctrl, which was creating the duplicates.
