dimmed pens

Ok- my problem is that my pens are dimmed and no longer available to me. This
has been a problem for other users too but no one seems to have an asnwer. My
pens used to work- I downloaded the trial version and they worked fine then.
I fell in love with OneNote and bought it- and the pens worked fine for a
while- then quit. I have reinstalled from my orinal disk several times and
still can't get the pens to work.

Somewhere on the net someone who had this problem found that if your speech
recognition is turned on the pens dim- and I checked that even though I
didn't remember ever enabling that feature- it was not turned on and my pens
still are not available to me.

So what is the deal? Does anyone know?

Thanks!

You might try running Detect & Repair. Do you have Office 2003 installed?

I did run Detect and Repair and did several web searches. The other
suggestion on the web was that the pens only worked with a tablet which I
know is not true since I didn't have one at first and they worked fine. I
have bought a tablet shortly after the OneNote purchase and it worked fine
with and without the tablet attached and now the pens won't work with or
without the tablet attached.

I have Office 2003 Student edition and I am running Win2k OS.

Indeed it should work.

Could you tell me the content of your C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\INK directory?

I'm assuming your programs are on C:\program files. If so, you can also try
this:
1) Close OneNote. In fact, close every program you can, including messenger
2) In the Start->Run box, type this: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\INK\inkobj.dll"

You should get a dialog saying "DllRegisterServer in [...] succeeded". Ok.

Then try OneNote again. Let me know if it works or not. I'll need to contact
you directly if it doesn't.

Benoit, OneNote development.

Ben:
The contents of my INK folder are:
GDIPLUS.DLL
HWXUSA.DLL
INKDIV.DLL
INKOBJ.DLL
PENUSA.DLL
SKCHOBJ.DLL
SKCHUI.DLL
TPCPS.DLL

I followed your instructions and got the "DllRegisterServer in [...]
succeeded"

Still the pens won't work- still dimmed.
Since you need to contact me directly- my email is (e-mail address removed)
I can email you my phone numbers or call you. I just really want this
program working like it used to! I have also reinstalled it several times-
from my original disk and also from MS site- DLing the trial version and
putting in my key- nothing has worked so far.

Thanks for all your help!

I've actually had a similar problem. I have a tablet PC, current service
pack. The pens sometimes grey out and I can't use them anymore. To fix it,
I've found that shutting Outlook and restarting it will restore their
functionality. Not sure why it happens though.
