word cannot save this file... the disk may be full blah blah blah. Why does this happen? It seems like something from 1988.

It IS something from 1988 -- a "Last Ditch" error message that has never
been changed.

What it really means is "Unable to write to the required location". When
the error message was created, the most likely cause WAS that the disk was
full.

The most likely cause these days is that the file server has not released
the file or that multiple users on the server have the same Unix ID.

See if this helps:

Sometimes I get this (Tiger, Word 2004, no server). I just "OK" and save
again, and it doesn't reappear. Strange. Phase of the moon causes it, I
think...

I have the same problem. It occurs when it is trying to create a auto-recovery version, then it often says that the disk is full. Most often I can still save it myself... Just a bit annoying that this keeps popping up, and no recovery version can be made.
Leopard, Word 08

Yeah, there's multiple situations under which you will see the error: that's
one of the one's that is merely "annoying" :)

If you turn on "Always make backup" in your preferences, you may never see
that "particular" problem.

You should also run Repair Permissions. Your specific error is occurring
because something is blocking the write to your "Temp" folder.
