Documents don't open or take a very long time

Hi
We have 2 windows xp sp3 machines running office 2002 sp3.
When the user trys to open an existing excel or word document using file
explorer it takes forever or not at all to open the file.
If you open excel then open the file inside using file - open from the menu
in excel then it opens fine.
I have done a full scan for viruses
I have uninstalled office, made sure all files gone, restarted then
installed office
It only appears to be a problem with office as pdf and other files open fine
from file explorer.
Any help that can be provided would be great
thanks

Go to your Control Panel, (click on Start then Click on Control Panel)

Click on Folder Options, then File Types

scroll down to and select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Exce
files),

click Advanced and select Open entry,

click the edit Button.

deselect "Use DDE"

append "%1" (include the quote marks) to the end of the applicatio
command line, Remove /dde if it is at the end of the command line

Then click on OK three times.

If the issue was being caused by DDE, then when you now open a Word do
file or Excel els; they will now open faster, without a long pause

when i had the issue.

something to do with PDF writer , screws up the DDE.
