Duration fields in the OLAP cube

J

Jesse

I'm using Project Server 2007. I've created some Data Analysis views where I
display and compare some fact data for Work (actual work, work, baseline
work) using the Assignment Non Timephased cube. I want to create the same
Data Analysis views to display and compare data for Duration (actual
duration, duration, baseline data). I cannot locate Duration data in any of
the cubes.

Is Duration data available in a cube, how can I get the Duration data into a
cube, and what Cube would I find it in?

Duration data is not available in the cube. I don not know of a way to get
this added to the cube. You might want to ask in the developer newsgroup
microsoft.public.project.developer

Jesse,

By default the value is not in the cube. You can however create enterprise
custom fields with a formula that read out the duration ( the formula is
simply [Duration]). Then you associate the custom field to the cube (Server
Settings > Cube > Configuration) rebuild the the cube and you have your
duration. Please note, in order for the duration to show in the custom field
you will need to republish the projects before rebuilding the cube
Hope this makes sense and helps

Marc,

I thought to suggest that but the only custom fields that are available to
add to the cube under Server Settings>Cube>Configuration are free form or
lookup fields I believe. I don't think formula fields are available to be
added to the cube. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Jonathan,

In regards to Dimensions within a cube you are right, but measures ( e.g.
cost and number custom fields) can be displayed in the OLAP cubes not as
dimentions but as measurements.
hope this helps

The more curious question is exactly what does one do with Duration data in
an OLAP cube? It's not quite the type of thing one typically sums up along
various dimensions is it? What would those dimensions be?

:) yeap that is a good question Gary. I do know that one of my organisations
wanted to see how much time duration is spend per project in comparison to
the effort involved, which I thought could be interesting. Having said this,
this can of course also be achieved with the PS database.

PS: looking forward catching up in Septmeber.

Same thing here. We are not quite at the maturity level to track work effort
and are using duration as a proxy. Though you could design a regular Project
Center view, the cube gives you the flexibility to modify on-the-fly. Only
PMO will have ability to create Project Views, but most users will have the
ability to view and modify cubes.
