'Enter network password' request when clicking send/receive

Sorry in advance for long message, and thanks in advance to anyone who can
help sort this problem.

I am trying to use Outlook 2002 again with my pop3 e-mail account, since yet
another system recovery a few days ago.

All the required settings with respect to incoming and outgoing mail server
addresses, usernames and passwords, port numbers, etc are correct and as
required according to what I have been told by Orange Customer Services. This
application was working (relatively) fine before unremovable viruses and
spyware had infected my pc. All the required settings for pop3 accounts are
now exactly as they were before a system recovery was required.

My problem is that I am being asked to: 'enter network password' every time
I click on 'send/receive'. This happens in both Outlook Express v6 AND in
Outlook 2002. As I was not aware what the password was that they were asking
for I went on to the Orange website and changed my 'sign in' password (I had
forgotten what this was, also) to something more memorable and input this
into the relevant place. This 'new' password was not accepted, nor was the
one already entered when the dialogue box first appeared. Putting a tick in
or taking it out from the 'save this password in your password list' box
makes no difference either.

If I click 'ok' after putting in what I think should be the right password
thie dialogue box disappears then comes back again asking the same question.
If I click on cancel or 'x' I end up with this error message:

"Task 'Orange Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : Your
e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your username and password in your
account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server responded
: ??RR[AUTH] Invalid login/password pair".

I don't uderstand why I am getting this request for a network password as my
laptop is not on any network - except when it is connected to the 'net' using
AOL 9.0 for Broadband. I also don't know why my Orange 'sign in' password is
not accepted by this dialogue box.

my laptop pc spec's:

Win XP sp2,
Norton Internet Security 2005,
Norton System Works 2005 Premier,
Office XP Professional with Front Page sp3,
Windows Defender,
AOL AntiSpyware v2.0,
Adaware SE Personal 1.06,
Spyware Doctor 3.2,
Spyware Blaster 3.5.1,
Free Internet Eraser 2.0,
AOL 9.0 for Broadband.
Intel Mobile Celeron 2.4Ghz
512Mb DDR Ram

All of these and other app's are currently fully updated and were NOT
causing this problem before system recovery.

any help much appreciated

Rob
