Entourage 2004 - Authentication Dialog Box

Alim Pervizi

Hello there,

After clicking Entourage 2004 (connecting to an Exchange Server 2007) from
the Dock, it launches and presents the authentication/security dialog box
(Account Information) to authenticate. If you click Cancel, you are
practically bypassing the authentication process while still reading any off
line e-mails and what not.

Is it possible to present the authentication/security dialog box before
opening Entourage, so if the credentials are right, Entourage should open,
if not it should quit to protect E-mail/Calendar/Contacts...
Are there any other means to secure Entourage?

Thank you

Why should you need to secure it in your own Mac OS X user account? Are
you sharing your Mac OS X user account with someone else? If so, stop
doing that and give the other person there own Mac OS X user account
(System Preferences > Accounts).

If you happen to use MS Outlook on a Windows machine, you have that
capability. Authentication dialog box appears before MS Outlook opens.
Well, it is a security issue.

In addition to JR's comments I'd say this is also a philosophical
difference in security between Mac OS X and Windows.

According to the designers of Microsoft Entourage and Apple's Mail,
security of data is the responsibility of the operating system, not the
application. The passwords you're entering are to access your E-mail
accounts, not to prevent access to the local data.

If you're logged in to Mac OS X as a particular user then all data is
expected to belong to that user. No need for the application to protect
it. Otherwise, you should expect Microsoft Word to prompt you for a
password to open any Word document, iPhoto to prompt you for a password
before you can open any album, Safari to prompt you for a password
before you can view bookmarks and history, etc.
