Entourage Databse problems

I have a user who has just recieved a new computer (2.4 GHz intel macbook w/
2G RAM, OS10.5.4; old computer was 1.25 Ghz PPC emac, 512M RAM, 10.3.9) and
I ran the User migration tool from the macbook to transfer his data and
programs. Entourage 2004 was having problems loading so I ended up trashing
it and reinstalling. Entourage is connected to an exchange 2003 server.

The problem I am having is on his old computer he had a number of folders
and addresses that were stored locally, not on the exchange server, so I
went and copied the identity from the old computer onto the new computer and
then switched identities. Well he started having the same problems wehre
Entourage never seemed to load his mailbox. I looked at the Activity
monitor and see that Entourage wants to use 1.3G of memory. The db file is
just under 4G in size. Could there be a memory issue or a corrupt DB? I
have rebuilt the db and there is no change, it still has problems loading.
I do not think he has hit the 2,000,000 item limit of Entourage, but I do
know that he has just over 1,900 folders in his "folders on my computer"
section.

The old computer work just fine, it is just slow in transitioning from mail
to calendar, it takes about 30 sec to finish. but it does not like it on
the new computer.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to start looking?

Thanks,
Sean

Migrating data from Panther to Tiger can present permission problem. This is
even more evident in the move to Leopard.

When you re-installed, did you use "Remove Office" first?
Have you updated? The last version is 11.5.1.

Entourage database size has nothing to do with the memory you are seeing.
Most likely Entourage might be using a big amount trying to index messages.
Be sure to exclude Entourage in the Privacy tab for Spotlight. The Exchange
account also has to re-sync an could be part of the problem.

Sounds like it's time to look at how to manage the database. You might
consider an archive Identity for mail that's older than one year.

The Entourage 2004 & 2008 database has no size limit, just a limit to the
number of items in the Entourage database: 2 million database items.

Note: Database items, not Entourage objects (such as messages, contacts,
events, etc.). Dave Cortright, Entourage developer, explains it this way: An
email or news message is actually TWO database items, and for anyone with
near a million Entourage objects (messages, contacts, events, etc.), they
will almost all be messages - the other stuff will be "loose change". So the
limit is effectively just under 1 million messages. Entourage will notify
you if you ever approach the limit.

Hope this helps!

To Diane Ross or anyone,
How can you reduce yr data base? Let´s say you want to work only with the ladt two years emails and store the older ones some whre elese where you easy can go back and look at them.
In my case size is 7.5 Gb and I feel program is slow when ex. shifting from adress book to email. Takes mayby 15 sec.
