Entourage does not respond

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Entourage quit responding. I tried every fix I could find on the internet and eventually uninstalled, re-installed, and installed all updates for MS Office. No luck. Entourage still will not load, even in safe mode. All other MS apps work fine. Help, anyone?

Did you try rebuilding the database?
Launch ENtourage pressing the Option key down.

I rebuilt the database and verified it. According to the Database Utility it's working correctly.

Try trashing the preferences then.
You won’t lose much since the critical stuff (account settings) are in
the database itself.

I'm not sure what you mean by "trashing the preferences." I assume that Entourage would have to open to get to preferences. When I try to open Entourage it immediately stops responding and I just get the Spinning Beach Ball of Death. None of the items in the toolbar work.

Try holding down the Shift key when opening Entourage. Does this help?
If yes, it’s a schedule that is firing send & receive. Open the Outbox
and delete the message.

Your preferences are in your User’s Library/Preferences.

When I start Entourage holding down the shift key I get the Database Utility, that's it. I can't get to any functions in Entourage, just the Spinning Beach Ball.

Are you sure you are holding down the Shift key and not the Option key.
Holding down the Option Key will force the database utility to launch. Other
wise Entourage is telling you your database is hosed and you need to
rebuild.

Your right, my bad. Holding the option key does bring up the Database Utility. Holding the shift key while I start brings up the Beach Ball and the application quits responding.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system
wide or if it’s your User’s folder that contains the problem.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to
the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office
there.

If Entourage opens in a new blank Identity, we need to bring over your
current Identity for testing. In your main User, drag your Identity to
Shared folder. Switch to new test User and drag from Shared (it will
copy...not move. Open Entourage in this Identity.
Does it work?

Entourage does open with the new User account, which I called, "test." . I am not clear on what you mean by, "drag your identity to Shared folder." I created a shared folder which I can access from either my main account or my new test account.

Are you talking about dragging the identity, "steve," under Places for my main account, to the shared folder? If I try that I get the little cloud as I am dragging which makes the place, "steve," disappear if I drop it.

Shared is a default folder at this location:

Your Hard Drive/Users/Shared

Don¹t forget to drag back after testing or Entourage will open in a new
Identity.

OK, I see the Shared folder you are talking about. What, "identity," do I drag there?

OK, I see the Shared folder you are talking about. What, "identity," do I drag
there?

The Identity you have been using that is giving you problems. It¹s call Main
Identity by default.

Mission accomplished! I copied the Main Identity from my, "Steve," account into the /Office 2008 Identities/ in the, "test," account. Everything seems normal.

See this link to troubleshoot your User¹s folder, but some folks have found
it easier to move everything to the new User. Luckily you have done part of
the steps already.

I give up. I had never used Entourage before and I guess I won't now. No big deal. All the other applications work just fine. I really don't need it.

I sure appreciate you sticking with me on this problem.

Thanks,

Steve
