Error 1402

Jim

I had Office Home and Student 2007 installed from CD including Excel Word and
Power Point. Worked.

Recently tried to install security updates issued around 11/9/2009. Most of
them installed. The Update for Excel KB 973593 did not install.

After that could not use Excel at all. Got Error 1402: Setup cannot open
the registry key UNKNOWN\.xHx\Excel.Template\ShellNew. Verify you have
sufficient permissions to access the registry....

The rest of Office Home and Student 2007 was OK at that time.

Tried to "repair" Office Home and Student 2007. Did not work and got same
Error Message but until almost the end of the "repair".

I am the owner/administrator of this home PC. Why would I not have the
permissions?

Next attempted to remove Office Home and Student 2007. "Remove Programs"
did not work. Then tried Mr. Fixit in KB 971179. Did not work. Then removed
manually using steps in KB 928218. Office Home and Student 2007 seems to be
gone.

Then tried to reinstall Office Home and Student 2007. Got same error 1402
message almost at the end of the installation.

Now I have nothing.

Then tried to reinstall Word 2002 using the CD (This version of Word was
removed by the set up when Office Home and Student 2007 was installed.) and
got another Error 1402, Setup cannot open the registry key
UNKNOWN\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew. Verify you have sufficient permissions
to access the registry....

Cannot even find these two registry keys:
UNKNOWN\.xHx\Excel.Template\ShellNew
UNKNOWN\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew

Now I have NOTHING. Can anyone help? If I could just get Word 2002 ack that
would be a start.

Thanks for any bit of advice

Jim,
I seem to have a situation that closely mirrors yours. I installed a
internet trial verision of Office Home and Student 2007 in March on XP. In
May as the trial verison period ended I just went and bought a CD. The
program installed, but I've never been able install the Office SP2 update,
Help does not load, and lately a few security patches have repeatedly failed
to install. Under the misguided thought that perhaps I the trial verison had
left unwanted traces in my registry (which is probably true) I opted for a
full uninstall a few days ago (the misguided thought) which XP wouldn't allow
and I was forced to use the fixit Macro. The Fixit Macro did the uninstall,
but when I tried to reinstall MS Office Home and Student 2007 the Error 1402
with HKEY_LOCAL _MACHINE\Software\Classes\ELMFile\DefautIcon -> ad naseum.

An IT guy whose a friend told me that my registry has collapsed and stranded
branches probably from the incomplete uninstall of trial verision of MS
Office due either to code sloppiness or copyright protection BS. Anyhow the
method now is to remove each those offending registry entry. Let me know if
you find or Microsoft creates a easier fix. I found this link which had been
suggested by support (and Pete) to be useless:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/838687/en-us

Still looking for a better way.
