Error! No topic specified

I'm trying to link an Excel file into a Word document so that it
automatically updates when the word document opens. Both are 2007 documents

Copy / paste link is straightforward. However, as soon as I change the word
settings to update links on open (either with a macro or via Tools / Options
etc), the text "Error! No topic specified" replaces the link.

I'd much appreciate guidance on how to correct this...

Which version of Office, with what updates is this? (Look in Help/About)

The only thing I find in the knowledge base
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/145641) is VERY old. But I
suspect the basic information is still valid: something's not allowing the link
to reach back to the application.

You say the link is fine until you close and re-open the document. Are you
sure? Have you tried explicitly forcing the update (click on the object and
press F9)?

I'm guessing the problem could be some security software, such as an anti-virus
program. A lot of security software these days doesn't allow OLE
"conversations" between applications. If you start Windows in Safe Mode do you
see something different?

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I tried forcing the update as suggested and switched off the anti-virus
software but without success.

For this particular exercise, I decided to re-write the code to copy the
Excel range into the Word document rather than rely on a linked sheet.

Again, thanks for the assistance.
