Excel 2007 crashes when saving a 2003 doc

Excel crashes every time I create an Excel file and go to save it as a
97-2003 doc. This happens even when working in compatibility mode. It also
happens when someone sends me a document create in Excel 2003, I open it, it
shows compatibility mode, and when I go to save it, Excel crashes, and then
attempts to recover the document.
All Windows (except IE8) and Office 2007 critical updates have been applied.

Does anyone know of a fix?
