Excel 2007 find/replace

Hi,

client has multiple excel files, originally created in excel 2003, opens in
2007 and find/replace does not work, does not find anything
looking for cells that can contain a specific number, the number could be
alpha-numeric such as JH-89 or just a 5 digit number, all the cells are
fomatted as text, contents of cells stored as text.
if I use the Find - Format - choose the format from a cell - select one of
the cells then it finds the cells that contain the same value.
If I open the same workbook in 2003, no problems with the find/replace it
finds what any value I enter for the the find, try the exact same find in
excel 2007 doesn't find anything.
tried match case, match entire cell contents, look in values, neither option
finds anything looking for.
Tried taking the 2003 document in Excel 2007 and using the convert up function
tried the find/replace still didn't work or it worked for the first find but
not another other finds.
If I take the converted 2007 version and open in 2003 the find/replace works
every time. so Saved it again as 2003 instead and opened in 2007 and find
replace worked. Used the convert up again, find replace work, client came in
the next day access the new converted documents and find replace doesn't work
again. Tried same documents on 2 other computers find/replace not working
again. Copied values only to a new workbook, find replace doesn't work
tried multiple other documents and find replace not working, either the 2003
or the 2007 version. Reinstalled Excel, no difference.
Any ideas....
