excel won't work after office update

hi

I have office 2000 SR-1 professional installed on my
computer. When I tried to update service pack 3, it tells
me to put in the cd. When I put in the cd, it says that
it can't find the data1.msi file. I got fed up with it
and cancel the installation, but now whenever I try to
open excel, for some strange reason it tells me to put in
cd and tells me it can't find the data1.msi file.

Other office programs like word, powerpoint, outlook, and
access work fine. Only excel is having this problem.

Please help.

Hi, David,

The Windows installer may be looking for a data1.msi file from another
product. Unfortunately, it doesn't do a very good job of letting you know
that. It may be on a different CD, such as Works or Word. Would you check
to see what other Office-family programs you have installed, and then try
inserting the CD from that program when prompted?

I also have word, access, powerpoint. and outlook
installed, but they do not prompt me fot the data1.msi
file when I open them. Only excel does that for some
reason.

I'm assuming all those programs were installed as part of the Office Suite,
so they shared an installation CD or two.

What I'm suggesting is that you look for Office-family programs that were
installed at another time. The best way to check what CDs were installed is
to go to the Windows Control Panel and run "Add / Remove Programs". Look in
the list to see if you have an older version of Office, or another Office
program such as FrontPage, or Works, or Word listed separately there. That
may be the CD it's looking for.

You may be able to re-run the update and provide that CD when prompted for
data1.msi.

It does not list other office-related programs, and I do
not have older versions of office or works installed.

I use excel pretty often so it's very annoying that only
excel is prompting for the cd.

Now I wish I hadn't try to update office.
