look up "default direction"
in options.

you might find how to
do the above via help/
f1.

after you set the default
to left to right, restart
excel.

Assuming you don't have any special language settings like Arabic
or Hebrew, I suggest that you should uninstall the entire Office
2007 from your system, then reboot yur system and then reinstall
Office 2007 again. this should sort itself out and save you
valuable time.

Have you tried running Office diagnostics to see if it can sort
out this problem?

yeah,

I think you/we discovered a
bug in excel 2007.

once the option "right to left"
is selected,

the option for "left to right"
is removed.

one possible method is to
reinstall excel but I haven't
tried it.

---------------------

there is however a possible
work around with the current
installation of excel and it's
slightly tricky.

open a blank workbook in
excel.

then under the "view" menu
option select "arrange all" for
the opened worksheet.

then select "cascade"

at the left hand corner and
above the first cell the work
book name will be notated.

right click on it and select
"view code"

this will take you to the
worksheets' visual basic
module.

then you will see "vba project" at
the top of the left hand window
and you will be able to click on
each spreadsheet that is notated
under it.

for each sheet there will be
a properties sheet in the window
below and it will have "display
right to left", in which case you
modify that property from true
to false

afterwards select "file" from
the menu bar and save then
exit and you will be taken
back to the worksheet.

hopefully the columns will
be left to right.

you will then need to save the
worksheet.

choose "save as" "other formats"
via the office button and name the
file book1 and then select the file
type as "excel macro enable workbook."

then try to save your work book in:

\Program Files)\Microsoft Office\
Office12\XLSTART

also, might as well save a copy in
"my documents".

----------------------

if you have a problem with
saving the workbook in the
"\xlstart" folder, it may be
due to not having admin
priviledges.

if so, exit excel and right click
on the excel short cut to pull
up the properties page.

I'm sure you have seen the
properties page for shortcuts
because it provides the option
to run in "compatibility" mode

however, you will need to look
around for the option to
"run as administrator".

after you save/apply the modification
above you should be able to save
into the xlstart folder.,

so open excel and book1 that you
saved in my documents.

then try to save it as "book1" as a
"excel macro enabled" file into the
xlstart folder:

[ \Program Files)\Microsoft Office\
Office12\XLSTART]

you should be able to save it
there and it should open up
with the left to right columns
when you startup excel.
--------------------

another trick is to hold
down the ctrl key and
click the excel shortcut
until a box pops up citing
that it will open in safe
mode.

the worksheet will open
with the columns left to
right.

unfortunately, I am not
sure what all is disabled
other than add-ins.

but you can try it out and
get back with us.

one possible method is to
reinstall excel but I haven't
tried it.

Or to try Office diagnostics first because sometimes it can reset
everything to factory settings! I have tried it for something
else but not for this particular problem that has baffled me. The
entire screen is flipped 180 degrees.

yeah, thanks for the
tip.

I am aware of the office
diagnostics, but didn't
bother with it.

the problem is definitely
a bug.

not only was there no left
to right feature,

there is no reset to default
options either.

also, finding the default
worksheet/ template to
modify the vb properties
is a problem as well.
