Exporting contacts by category

I have 3000+ contacts and want to export only certain groups as a tab deliniated file. Cannot figure out how to do this. It only lets me export the entire data set.

Or, alternately, if I could export the entire contact list but have it include the category listings, that would work too.

Any ideas?

You can export as Entourage archive (.rge) file. This option lets you select
specific categories to export. If your group does not have a category you
might assign one i.e. Christmas Card list. You can then import this
Entourage archive (.rge) into a new blank Identity where you can export as a
tab delimited file for just that group. Round about way of getting there. If
I were an Excel user I might be able to suggest a way to manipulate the data
there using export as tab delimited.

when I try to export the contacts it says "there are no items in the selected
project or category" I just want to export a category, simply. I don't
understand why this is so complicated.

The process I explained was two parts. Did you first export as Entourage
archive (.rge) the contacts in a category?

Did you import these into a new Identity?

You will now be able to export as a tab delimited file because there is only
the category you exported/imported into the new Identity.

Are you trying to export the group? Did you assign a category to that
group's contacts? You can only export as category to an Entourage archive
(.rge).

Next time, please start your own thread. It's not good to hijack a thread.

well, constantcontact is a web application. i just would like to
import my contacts into it but i need to do so as a CSV. i don't want
to import ALL my contacts though - just my real estate associates, who
are categorized as such in entourage 2008.

Now that you have detailed your problem, these are the steps you need to
follow.

1. Assign a category "real estate" to all contacts you want to export.
2. Under File --> Export select to export as Entourage archive (.rge) and
select "Local contacts" and from the popup list the category "real estate"
3. Create a new Identity in Entourage and import this .rge file.
4. Export your contacts in the new Identity as a tab delimited file.

You can then export the tab delimited file to Excel and create a .csv file.

exported", and then it goes on to give instructions on how to export a
note? thanks for your help!

Do you not read the instructions? You have to select each member in the
group and assign a category to them to indicate the group status. Then you
can export as Entourage archive file by category.

but there are no groups -- i organize with just categories. i have
about 1500 contacts, segregated into a number of categories. i'd like
to just export one of those categories to a CSV (or equivalent)

Glad I could help. Sure would be nice to have this as an option though.
