FE Updater

I am using FE Updater in my first phase from splitting all databases between
FE and BE. That has gone fine and has been running for some time.

I am now about to convert 97 databases to 2003. I would appreciate it, once
again, if the writer of that fine utility can verify something for me.

I know how to add the registry entry to NOT ASK the conversion question.
That aside, and assuming I can work thru all the conversion issues related to
database structure that may come up . . . . .

Will any 97 FE that is on the computer continue to open only in Access 97 -
- - -if called up via the StartMDB ini?? I see in the FAQ that I can specify
past to Access . . . but even if I do not do that, will using the FE Updater
ensure that databases created in 97 will only open via 97 if called up via
the StartMDB ini for that database? Does it get around the "Whichever
program version you had opened last is what will open the database" issue??

Thanks

Yes, if you use the StartMethod=AutoSelect option. The user can have
both A97 and A2003 installed on their system.

The Auto FE Updater only uses the last version started if you specify
the StartMethod=FileExtension option.

However what I'd suggest you do is do is create a second set of files
which use the A2003 FE and the A2003 installed on the system. Leaving
the BE in A97 format. Get one or two users going on it for a few
days. Just to be careful.

Then move the other users over to A2003. Once you're happy all is
running well then convert the BE over to A2003 format.

Tony,

I read and re-read the FAQ and then your response to me re Start Option - -
- -
O'm sorry, but I'm still not sure what I need to do to ensure databases
created in Access 97 ONLY opening in Access 97 via the ini, regardless of
what version of Access was opened last on the computer.

I plan to roll out the 03 FEs just like you said, BTW. Your app really
makes this transition rather easy. It's been about 6 months coming!!!!

Use the StartMethod=AutoSelect option. The Auto FE updater is smart
enough to know that only A97 can run A97 format MDB/MDEs.

Thanks for the kind words.
