Text encoding: Windows (Default) this is checked - MS-DOS - Other encoding.
Can you please help as nothing I do will open up the document.

Do you have Microsoft Word, and if yes, what version? Are you
sure the document you're trying to open is a Microsoft Word
document, and if yes, what version of Word was used to create it?

I am using Microsoft Word 2003 and it is definitely a word document - has the
..doc file extension. It was also created in Word 2003. I also have other
files that have the same problem and sometimes I get a dialogue box pop up
saying that microsoft needs a converter to display this file properly. When I
click OK to install the converter it stops and I get a statement saying that
the feature you are trying to use in on a network resource that is not
available. So I am stuck either way :(

Just because the file has a .doc extension doesn't necessarily
mean it's a Word file. If you want to email the file to
scroospammers at yahoo dot com, I'll take a look at it.

Well, the file does appear to be a Word 97-2003 .doc file, and it
does appear to be corrupt. If this file was emailed to you, then
it could have gotten scrambled in the encoding/decoding process
when it was emailed. Or maybe at some time the document was
edited/saved directly to removable media (floppy disk, USB flash
drive, etc.) and was corrupted in the process. You can see most
of the text if you use the Recover Text From Any File option in
Word 2003's File | Open menu, although all the formatting is lost.
