Find/Replace for WordPerfect Quotes

Sunshine

We have a 1000 page document converted from WordPerfect that contains an A
(in WordPerfects typographic symbols font) in place of the double quote (")
character throughout the document. Does anyone know of a way to do a mass
change. My efforts to paste the symbol into the find/replace have failed.
I've also had little luck with using the find and replace macro from
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/FindReplaceSymbolsContent.htm though that
could be my lack of experience using macros!

I know that WP quotes are really ugly, but could someone hold my hand
through the mess of doing the changes?

In what way have your "efforts to paste the symbol into the
find/replace...failed"? Did you use Ctrl+V to paste?

Yes, I've used Ctrl+V to paste. That does indeed change all of the WP A's
with the quote character as desired, but it also replaces every regular 'A'
and 'a' with a quote character. For example, the word 'and' becomes "nd!
That won't work.

Usually, you would specify the font (WP Typographic or what it's called) in
"Find what".

But I heard that WordPerfect (in their export filters) and/or Microsoft (in
their import filters) messed up quite a bit, and there's lots of problems
around this, depending also a lot on the version (both of WP and Word), the
format you use to exchange files, and so on.

So the "WP typographic" characters might not be found when you do specify
this font.

Edward Mendelson spent a lot of time on these newsgroups, and has collected
info here:

Maybe it might help you, in case the simple replacement does not work.

Klaus

Thanks for the suggestion. We have another WP document that we will convert
and Edward Mendelson's website information will be of great use so that we're
not confronted by this problem again. Unfortunately, my husband has spent a
lot of time making other editing changes to the document with the messed up
characters and does not wish to lose those, so we are still looking for a way
to do a mass change on it. It's looking rather hopeless right now. Sigh.

I thought I should reply to your message once again. Upon closer examination
of Mr. Mendelson's website there is indeed a suggested macro to help with our
precise problem which in my haste I overlooked before. We shall employ his
macro to solve our dilema. Thank you so much for directing us to his site.

Glad it helped!
