Finish Variance

You would need to use a custom task Duration field containing the following
formula:

[Finish] - [Baseline1 Finish]

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your assistance.
Is there a way to copy the Baseline 1 to Baseline. This would be my
preferance to show finish variance over your suggestion. The project is about
1,300 task. I thought of doing a cut and paste from Baseline 1 start/finish
to Baseline start/finish. Is there another way?

Catfish,
There are a couple other ways I can think of but I wouldn't say they are
necessarily any better than cut and paste. The first is to drag and
drop. Select all of Baseline1 Start and Finish and drag it to Baseline
Start and Finish respectively. The second method is to use VBA but even
in my pro-VBA opinion, that's way overkill.

There is a quick and easy way by completing these sets of steps:

1. Open the project in question
2. Click Tools - Tracking - Save Baseline
3. Select the "Save Interim Plan" option
4. Click the "Copy" pick list and select Baseline
5. Click the "Into" pick list and select Baseline10
6. Click the OK button

This first set of steps will preserve your original Baseline values in case
you want them back.

7. Click Tools - Tracking - Save Baseline
8. Select the "Save Interim Plan" option
9. Click the "Copy" pick list and select Baseline1
10. Click the "Into" pick list and select Baseline
11. Click the OK button
12. Click the Yes button to overwrite the baseline

Hope this helps.

There's a very simple way to do this, and to preserver the original Baseline
values in the process. See my answer to Catfish's question.

Dale,
Do I detect a subtle preference for the server version of Project in
your post :)

You are correct that your suggestion works well also although I don't
know if it is any simpler than a drag and drop. I guess the only reason
I responded is that Catfish seemed to be looking for another suggestion
different from what you posted, but then maybe he was referring to an
earlier suggestion.

At any rate, I think we gave Catfish multiple options to chose from.

If you take a look at the drop-downs for source and target in "Create
Interin Plan" you'll see you can use alomst copy from almost any source data
set and save it into almost another data set slot. Go to to Tools,
Tracking, Save Baseline. On the dialog box choose "Save Interim Plan" As
the source select Baseline 1. As the target select Baseline. viola! You
probably should save the current baseline into an unused baseline slot
first, just so you can restore it if needed later.

Thanks, Jan!
That's exactly what I did before I posted the message but I was afraid I
will be wiping out an original formula because I was prompted with message
that existing data for Duration 1 will be deleted.
How can I check what the original formula is and whether any of my data will
be affected by the change?

Hi Melissa,

Right-click on the column header and select Customize Fields... and in the
dialog, click the Formula... button. Examine the white space - all white
means no formula. If there is a furmula, it will be listed here.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Regarding the Finish variance formula. I've tried this in a custom duration
field and get 0 days no matter what data I put in either field. Does anyone
have any suggestions?
