Hi: two days ago the "footnote" rubric disappeared from the insert menu in WORD. The tech person in my office came and updated the Word Software, thinking this would resolve the problem. But the problem remains. It is possible to insert footnotes and endnotes using the apple-option-F (or E) keys, but I am mystified by this. Please tell me what to do to get "footnote" back under the insert menu. Thank you!

Make sure you didn't accidentally turn on "Word 5.1 Menus". Look under
View to see if there's a check next to that option. If that isn't the
problem:

If you go to View | Customize Toolbars/Menus, select the Menu Bar, and
click Reset, it should set all your main menus and built-in toolbars
back to the default.

If you have customized your menus or toolbars, you may want to explore
the Customize Toolbars dialog, and drag the commands you are missing
back to the toolbars/menus yourself, rather than wipe out your
customizations by clicking Reset.

As a friendly FYI for future reference: You'll be glad to know that 2008
finally did away with the Word 5.1 toolbar & the Word 5 menu:)... although
Control+5 & Control+8 are still assigned to them - they just don't exist.
Instead you get a dialog that says "This command is not available in ths
version of Microsoft Word.".

Eh. I did test that, and found the same thing (and rolled my eyes when I
got the error message). But it's in my automated reply for reset menus,
and there seemed no point in deleting it--easy enough dead end to take,
and might help someone in the archives who figures 2004/2008 are the same.
