Footnote Lines

Occasionally while writing papers with footnotes I will delete all the notes (by erasing the superscripts in the text) yet the separator lines will remain. They are absolutely impossible to delete. I have tried going to normal view, view footnotes, and then erasing the lines, but that gets rid of them all when I only want to erase the orphan lines. Ideas?

You've missed one :)

Sorry: What has happened is that you have deleted the note "text", but left
its Reference in the text.

There is at least ONE note reference on that page somewhere.

A good trick is to place your cursor on the previous page, then hit "Command
+ g" and go to NEXT footnote.

The cursor will stop with the invisible note reference selected. Hit
Delete.

If the note reference is enclosed within a tracked change (an insertion or
deletion) and you do not have tracked changes displayed, you will never see
it :)

Hope this helps

Thanks John-

I tried that, however it didn't highlight anything. Any other thoughts?

Thanks so much.

No other suggestions :)

There's a footnote in there somewhere :) If it's in the "Deleted" text, it
will be rather difficult to find. If it's in the header or footer story,
you won't be able to find it unless you are in the headers or the footers.

You could try a Maggie. It might be a corrupt section break (clutching at
straws here...)

To do a Maggie:

1) Create a new blank document

2) Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark

3) Copy it.

4) Paste in the new document.

5) Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the Word PC-L mailing list who first publicised the
technique.

Cheers
