Frustrated......

JsGenesis40

Hi ...need some advice...seems im not the only one with the _derived/norbots.htm problem with form feedback...my web form problem is http://www.jbmtechnologies.com/contact/contact main.htm

my front page extension area is http://www.jbmtechnologies.com/_vti_inf.html

'FPVersion' identifies the version of the FrontPage Server Extensions
installed, and should not be changed.
--><!-- FrontPage Configuration Information
FPVersion="5.0.2.2623"
FPShtmlScriptUrl="_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc"
FPAuthorScriptUrl="_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe"
FPAdminScriptUrl="_vti_bin/_vti_adm/admin.exe"
TPScriptUrl="_vti_bin/owssvr.exe"

The host is broadview net...I have been through the discussion boards, edited out the _derived/norbot like microsoft suggested..then i get a "can not "POST" alarm..been one of them days...the one gentleman about front page changing it back after editing is correct..it does change it back..i was able to edit a different way. Also, i tried putting the _derived/nortbot in the directory of my Contact directory as it seems not to want to go into the root.

Also, when i try to use FP to FTP..it says a web does not exist there..creat one? i say ok...<again frustrated> and then it says it cant....lol....<just shaking my head>

Any help available...

The clue here is "FTP" you can *NOT* FTP a web to publish it if the web contains components that
require the FrontPage extensions, and forms are one of those components.

You *must* publish using http://www.jbmtechnologies.com or http://www.jbmtechnologies.com
as the "publish to" address.

Hi...educated guess...isnt the _derived/nortbot created at the time of publishing your web?

Again..thanks for your helpt

A 550 error indicates a permissions error on the server.

OK, your site is hosted on an Apache/UNIX server with FrontPage extensions:
Server: Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) PHP/4.2.2 FrontPage/5.0.2.2510 mod_ssl/2.8.11 OpenSSL/0.9.6b

As verified by opening this page : http://www.jbmtechnologies.com/_vti_inf.html

However there is no homepage in the root of your web, because your URL opens your web in folder
view.

Your home page is located in a folder named JBM%20Home%20Page
because the following link opens your home page.
http://www.jbmtechnologies.com/JBM Home Page/JBM Technologies Home.htm

Also, home.htm needs to be renamed index.htm to function properly on an Apache/UNIX.
When published FrontPage will then rename it to index.html if needed by the server.

You *must* move your home page to the root of your web.

To use forms you *must* publish to http://jbmtechnologies.com or http://www.jbmtechnologies.com
because when publishing using FTP, FrontPage does not publish all of the files necessary to operate
your form.

With your local web open you need to click File > Publish web... ( or site... if FP2003 ) and then
enter either of the http:// addresses or your forms will *never* work.

Also, you need to remove spaces from file and folder names and replace them with underscores _

The form needs to be in a location inside your local web, meaning if you open FrontPage and then
click File > Open Web... when your local copy opens, everything that the web uses / needs will be in
the list of files or inside one of the folders you see *inside* of FrontPage when you click View >
Folders on the FrontPage toolbar.

Yes, northbots is automatically created ( in a manner of speaking ) when you publish, however you or
the user will never see it, as it is what is used to create the standard confirmation page "on the
fly" when your form is submitted. ( unless you have created a custom confirmation page and
designated it in form properties )

Also have the host make sure the _private folder has "server write permissions" applied as this is
where the form saves the data that is entered. ( Unless you have specified another location in the
web. At this point I would recommend against that. Get it working first. )

basically works...I have to fix a couple of minor things... The form doesnt work still. So..I
publish the form to a directory on my system. Then republish it to jbmtechnologies.com....i tried
that earlier...said it didnt exist..but i will retry... what about the derived/norbots..does it get
created when i fully publish my forms..and how would i transfer that...any great secrets

Hi Steve...

Ok..went back and got it to create the _derived/nortbots on its own...goto publish it..and it gives me the 550 permission denied on the norbots...any ideas there..i dont want to ftp it..like you said...it wont work im sure...i just need to get the dang server to accept this...

Othere then that..everything you told me worked so far ....thanks i could send you my 3 webs that has the form and maybe you can try to publish it...

anyways..thanks for the help

S

OK, when you're working with your local web and try to test the form, you will get the northbots
error, because the local web isn't running on a server with extensions, unless you have IIS and
extensions installed on your machine and have either created the web in IIS or published it too IIS.

Northbots isn't anything you create, it's something that FrontPage does automatically.

When you publish to a properly configured "extended" server the form will work as advertised

You do need to recheck your "form properties" and look at the save results page and the address /
file name of your custom confirmation page. The confirmation page "file name" looked funny to me
when I used view source for the form, and I could not find it on your server.

Also, if you have removed the spaces from folder and file names as suggested, you need to go into
Form properties for your form and relink to the newly named files.

This is one area where FrontPage will *not* automatically update the links.

If the web is published correctly (using HTTP to an extended server) the
Nortbots.htm page will never be uploaded to, or created in, the live site.
Nortbots.htm is an error message used in Disc Based webs - nothing to do
with confirmation pages. The only way it gets to the live site is by using
FTP from a disc based web (though there is a bug with FP98 explained at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;181205&Product=fp98 )

No. nortbots.htm is created when you save the form page in a disc based
web. If you http publish to a FPextended server the nortbots.htm file is
not uploaded or created in the live site - it is not needed.

Ron

S

Stefan B Rusynko

The nortbots.htm is not actually "created" in disc based webs
But it is "used" when FP can not find the SE for a run time component like a form from the default install location (based on
version of FP installed) from:
%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\XX\bin\YYYY
- where XX is the SE version (40 for 2000 / 50 for 2002 / 60 for 2003)
- and YYYY is the language (1033 for English)

Ill keep trying. Also fixed the spaces like you all suggested..thanks...ill keep trying...when
FP2002 publishes..it also wants to publish the _derived/norbots. Thats when the error occurs. LIke
Stefan asked.. i do have the files that he wrote. It looks like I have a proper config'd server.
According to the provider..i do...Ill keep reading...oh..password to my directory is jbm8878 and isp

Online at http://www.jbmtechnologies.com/contact/contact.htm
I still see an invalid save file name / location
(u-file="Web Form Reply")
- that's not a file name
- a valid file name would be something like: Web_Form_Reply.htm which must exist
and a save file location of "../../_private/Web_Form_Reply.htm"
- meaning save results to the file Web_Form_Reply.htm in the _private folder 2 levels up from this page
