Is there a way to retrieve a file that does not have a
backup after it has been rewritten? Please help, I would
appreciate any help on this, though i realize this is
hard to do without a backup having been made. Thanks so
much.

Is this a Word document? Did you turn on Auto-save? (I believe it is
turned on by default) If yes, then look for a file called Word
Autorecovery. If you had turned it on, you would have the last few times
that it was saved.
