How do I compress pictures in Word 2002?

I have screen prints in a Word document. I want to reduce the size of my
document by cropping these images, but when I right click the image and
select Format Picture | Compress, Word does not appear to make any changes
and the cropped areas are not deleted (even though I have 'delete cropped
area of pictures' checked). Any ideas?
