How do I keep Outlook from deleting past Calendar events

When I tried to hotsync my Blackberry yesterday and it brought up whether to
accept my exchanges between computer and blackberry it said there were 8
items to delete from my computer. . . all of my calendar items for the first
day I started to use the blackberry. I don't want any of my previous events
deleted. I need them for reference. I rejected the hotsync because of this,
but I couldn't add any of the new items, then.

How do I tell the device not to delete the items to my computer, yet accept
the items that I need to pass between devices?
