how do I lighten or darken graphics

In Word 2003 and earlier, select the picture. You should see a Picture
toolbar. One of the buttons on the toolbar has an icon of the sun and
an up arrow, to make it brighter. Next to that is a button with the
sun and a down arrow to make it darker.

In Word 2007, select the picture. The Picture Tools ribbon will
appear. At the left end of that ribbon, click the Brightness button
and choose the amount (note that hovering the mouse pointer over a
choice in the gallery temporarily changes the selected picture so you
can get a preview of what will happen if you click that choice).

However, I recommend doing this and other graphics manipulations in a
real graphics program, such as the free IrfanView (www.irfanview.com),
and only importing the final version into Word.
