How do I set up network connections independent of drive letters?

In Office 2003 you could create a network place that did not require you to
map to a specific drive. You just had to enter a URL. Is there an
equivalent in Vista? All I see in Vista is connections requiring a drive
letter.

Try asking in a Windows Vista news group for a better informed answer.
