How do I stop receiving multiple copies of the same email?

Every time Outlook checks for email, I receive 2, 3, and sometimes 4 copies
of the same email. It doesn't repeat every email, just half or more of them.
It is not an issue of checking email and receiving the same set of emails
that happen to be in my ISP's inbox. I just get multiples of some but not
all of the latest emails that happen to have arrived since Outlook last
checked.

I have downloaded and installed the latest updates and patches, as far as I
know. I am running Office 2003 Pro, on Windows XP Home edition, on an HP
zd8000 laptop pentium 4 with 1.024 G of Ram. I have been running the same
configuration for 18 months, and this just started happening a few months ago.

Help.
