How to create an employee time schedule?

Hi all,

I can figure out how to do a schedule showing start and end times to
calculate hours worked, however, I have to subtract the half hour break time
to arrive at total hours to pay the employee. If I put -.50 and then add the
two cells together, I get a result of -.5 which clearly is wrong.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

Many thanks, Colin

The basic time unit in Excel is the day, i.e. a value of 1 = 1 day. By
subtracting 0.5 you therefore subtracted half a day, or 12 hours. Half an
hour is 1/48 of a day. You can also use "00:30" (quotes included) to deduct
the half-hour.

= A1 - 1/48
= A1 - "00:30"
