how to remove all unwanted tabstop behavior?

I am working with a doc from another person that somehow has left tab
stops set to an annoying 7.5. I went through every paragraph and
dragged these off of the ruler, but this is somehow set in the doc, as
Word wants to put tab back to the wrong value on a new paragraph after
hitting return. How do I blanket remove all of this unwanted behavior
and get back to just having tabs that advance 0.5 spaces with each
press of the tab key?? Thanks for all advice.

Sounds like the paragraph style you're using (Normal?) has a tab
defined at 7.5 inches. Go into Format > Style and check, and delete
the tab if so.
