How to remove paragraph markers at end of each line after cut-and-paste?

When I cut-and-paste from some applications into a Word document,
there are paragraph markers at the end of each line.

Is there an easy way to remove those paragraph markers, either during
or after pasting, other than editing each line and deleting the
paragraph markers manually?

Ideally, I would like Word to retain the paragraph markers before a
blank line; that is, at the end of true paragraphs.

I am using Office Word 2003 on an Intel-compatible PC (not a Mac).

Instead of simply pasting, use "Paste special" and choose "unformatted
text". This might fix it.
