Inserting BMP v/s JPEG into word problems!!!

My expereince has been that Jpeg's are 24-bit images. The
24bit compression is no longer there once a jpeg is in a
word doc (i.e. it is no longer an jpeg image, but a word
image) Stick to 16, 8, 4 or even 1 bit images (like gif's
for example).

I tried inserting GIF's instead of JPEG, the output
remains the same, i.e. the document size with the GIF
image is still larger than that with the BMP inserted. Is
this expected?
