Inserting new documents into a master document

I have a Master document in Word 97, and I want to insert new sub-documents
into the master document.

When I try to do this, however, the sub-documents are inserted into the last
sub-document. How do I get them into the master document on the same level as
the other subdocuments, and not as sub-sub documents?

I'm working on a document converted to Word 2000 from WordPerfect.
Everything seems to be fine, except that each page has a footer, containing
no text or formatting (as far as I can tell) which I can't get rid of.

The original document has a header (which has successfully made it through
the conversion) but no footer.

Is there a way of deleting this unwanted footer? There's nothing in it to
mark and then press Delete.

Many thanks.

Depending on your version of Word, you may still see an empty paragraph in a
footer that has ever had content even if you delete all the content. Usually
(at least in recent versions), this will not affect page formatting, but if
it does cause a problem, just set the footer margin to 0".
