Interface between Outlook and Windows Welcome Screen

Does anyone know how Outlook interfaces with the Welcome Screen. It seems
that my welcome screen icon always says I have unread emails, even though I
have read all and filed them before closing Outlook. This doesn't seem to be
a problem for my wife, who uses Outlook Express for her single email account.
The Welcome screen is accurate and tells her the correct number of unread
emails. I use Outlook and have one Exchange account and several others that I
POP in. All email for each account is delivered to the Exchange account's
inbox and I sort them into data folders as I read them. It's just crazy that
after I close Outlook with an empty inbox that the Welcome window still says
I have a bunch of unread emails. Aaaargh!

The Welcome screen's mail count has been inaccurate since its inception. Most
people trun off the notice. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304148
