Internet Explorer - Site History Question

T

texansgal

My boyfriends Dad told him to always go in and clear the history when he is
finished. He told my boyfriend NOT to type anything into the address bar
because he wants HIS personal sites to always come up. So, my boyfriend types
the site into the Google Toolbar so that it will not show up in the dropdown
of the address bar. I told him that it didn't matter if he typed anything
into the address bar because when he clears the history, it clears EVERYTHING
out of that dropdown box. I told him that if his Dad wants to keep his
frequently visited sites, he needs to save them to his FAVORITES. His Dad
says that we messed his computer up because NOW when we clear the history,
his addresses are gone. We got into an argument because he says that when he
would clear the history, his personal site addresses would stay. I told him
that it has never done that, that it will ALWAYS ERASE anything in that
dropdown of the address bar. Was there a time when it would KEEP those
addresses when you clear the history?

Please HELP me clear this up.

Thanks

Not an Office question but once the history is cleared, the history is
cleared.

If Dad thinks his computer is messed up, then he needs to state why he
thinks that so that it can be cleared up. and then again if he's that
computer illiterate nothing will change his mind.

Sorry that I posted it here, but I couldn't find where I could post it.

He is one of these men that thinks that women can't do anything, that they
all NEED a man to do things for them... which is something that will NOT be
happening with me and his son... His son does anything that he says, but when
he and I got into it tongiht because of this, I told him that I wouldn't be
back over there. I am pretty computer saavy so when I told my boyfriend that
a couple of weeks ago, I knew what I was talking about.

But, I know that anything that I say will be wrong. My boyfriend is 36 and
briefly staying at their house. So, he is respecting anything that his
parents ask of him. I understand that. BUT, SOME WOMEN DO HAVE BRAINS, ya
know? lol

Thanks a bunch!

I'm damned near old enough to be your boyfriend's mother and I am fully
aware that some women do have brain. Hey, I've even heard that there might
be a few men who do too.

You'd be better off staying out of this battle. Let dad dig his own hole and
screw up his own computer. And should he ever ask for advice, DUMMY UP!

Depending on how you clear the history, doing so may or may not remove the
entries from the dropdown of the address bad. Entries typed there are
stored in the registry, not in the history files. This has always been
the case, but it may not be true in IE7.

If family members are interfering with one another's settings, the obvious
solution is to set up spearate accounts for each user. That way jtere's
never a conflict.

As far as I know, they have IE6.

They go in through the Tools> IE Options> Delete Cookies> Delete Files>
Clear History... they CLEAR and supposedly HAVE cleared all 3 of the fields
where you click on that box in the Options.

My boyfriend just told me that his Dad had it set to where it would NOT
erase just those sites that he wanted on there. That when you clear the
History, it would clear ONLY the Google and Yahoo toolbars, but NOT the
address bar.

The way that he explained it is that his brother would go in and clear all
the sites off, the temp internet files, the cookies and the history, but it
would keep his dads personal sites on there.

I do not recall it ever saving JUST those sites yet erasing everything else.

Thanks!

Clearing the history that was doesn't get rid of Typed URLs, at least not
up thorugh IE6 SP1. You're right about the Favorites, though. If he
wants to keep pointers to particular sites, that's where they should go.
You can only have 25 typed URLs after all, but you can have a virtually
unlimited number of Favorites.

It may be useful to know that if you use Ctrl-O to bring up the Open box
and type a URL there, the URL will not appear in the address dropdown.

For example, if he types in www.yahoo.com, it WILL keep that in the address
bar when the "Clear History" is clicked and cleared? If he goes through a
link on a page, it will NOT stay in the address bar?

I just don't understand that if they are doing the same thing that they were
months ago, WHY it changed all of the sudden. Do you think when their
computer was updated, maybe it changed?

Thanks for the help and sorry if this is a pain in the behind.

That's the way it works on my system, BUT I just tried in on an XP Home
system, and clearing the History by clicking that buttom in Internet
Options did clear everything from the the address bar dropdown. The
change in behavior probably occured as part of one of the many updates to
IE, and there's likely nothing you can do about it. There have been many
posts in the IE6 group regarding entries that just won't go away, so maybe
that got fixed somewhere along the line.

I think that separate user accounts is the way to go.

Texansgal and I chatted a bit about this topic outside of the group. I think
there's a lot more going on than just whether his history is still present
and no one else's. I advised her to back away from the situation because
she'll never win. :-(

That's probably the best advice. Anyway, I've let my family counseling
license expire.

Computers can really cause a lot of issues in the home. I'm really glad my
husband and I have separate systems. I *finally* networked them together.
It's only been 6 years with a network. (We really didn't have a need to do
it before the other week. Even now it's only going to be a once in a blue
moon kind of thing.)

Have your "boyfriends dad" make an account/profile for your boyfriend to
use and this won't be an issue anymore. Try the Windows Help for
instructions.
