Linked Excel tables opened exclusively

Why can't Excel linked tables be opened by multiple users? The error message
is that the table is already opened exclusively by another user. Access
options are set to open tables for shared use. I realize that Excel does not
have locking mechanisms for guarding against simultaneous updates, but then
linked Excel tables are opened in non-updatable mode. Any workarounds?
The database in Access 2000 format, Excel tables are 2002, Access front ends
2002 and 2007.

My users don't have issues with that because my database is split and the
tables are on the backend on the server, as are the Excel files. Do you have
the database split?

Having your database split has nothing to do with linking to Excel files.
The excel file needs to be set to share.

Yes, the db is split. FE on clients, XL tables on server. Spreadsheets still
get opened exclusivley.
