MathType crashes Word XP

I installed a trial of MathType as a way to easily add and reference
equation numbers in a document I'm working on. I works well, but I've had
it installed less than 24 hours and twice Word has "encountered a problem
and has to close". The recovered file contains "repairs" in which equations
have been converter to pictures (not very convenient for editing). I went
to Design Sciences web site (support) and apparently this is a very, very
common problem, which they claim is caused by Word - not their software.
I'm using Word XP/2002, but this apparently has been around for previous
versions also.

My questions are:

1. Does anyone know if this is still an issue with Word 2003? Did MS fix
whatever they needed to stop the crashes? If so, I might upgrade.

2. Does Word 2003 have better tools for adding and referencing equation
numbers? This is the main reason I went to MathType, and with Word 2002 it
was ackward to do.

3. Are there any other products like MathType that do equations, but are
more stable?

Thanks for any help. In general I like Word, but issues like this make it
difficult to use for mathematical/technical documents.
