MSOCache folder

P

Patrick Schmid [MVP]

Office 2007 created a whooping 500MB MSOCache folder. I am aware what
this
is for, and want to get rid of it.

Followed the instructions found here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825933
but there is no "Office Installation Files" on my cleanup items.

Any ideas?
Don't. You should not remove that folder for Office 2007. In fact,
Microsoft did not provide the ability to remove the folder with 2007.
The folder is vital and it should stay where it is. Removing it is not
supported.

Hi Franco,

MS changed the design after Office 2003 so that the Local Install Source (LIS) in the \MSOCache hidden folder, an option for Office
2003, is a requirement for operation of Office 2007. It is placed on the same drive as the Program files for MS Office 2007.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924616/en-us?FR=1

The plus side is that MS Office 2007 shouldn't need the original CD as often :) If you delete the Office 2007 MSOCache folder at
some point the MS Installer will ask for the CD and put it back in.

Just put the CD back in and do a "Repair," or whatever the terminology is.
\MSocache is magically recreated in a couple minutes.

The directory is only needed when adding to/removing from/updating Office,
or when you accidentally delete, say, "Word.exe" (which happens at least
once a day here). Other than that it's just taking up space. MS used to
allow expert users to relocate it, but not anymore.
