MSOCache foler -- OK to delete?

J

John Blaustein

Hello,

After doing a clean XP Home install (updated to SP2), I installed Office
2000 Small Business Edition (followed by several online Office Updates).
The installer created a folder on my D: drive (not C: drive) called MSOCache
that's 5.3MB. While MSOCache does not take up a lot of room, is it safe to
delete this folder and all its files? I like to delete things I don't use
or need.

Thank you.

The MSOCACHE folder is the "Local Install Source" - its use is for
resiliency, additional program features installation, and provides a
location for caching Office Updates. It is likely larger than 5.3 MB
though! On my machine, it is closer to 530 MB - if you have the space,
leave it - it is there for a purpose.

More details online - search Google for "Local Install Source".

Thanks, Glenn,

I'm at another computer right now, but I'm pretty sure I had the size of the
MSOCache folder correct at 5.3MB. I will check again tomorrow.

If the folder had been installed on my C: drive, I'd be fine with that.
Having it on D: is a little inconvenient since I'm trying to reserve D: for
data only.

I found this information, but it applies to Office 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=825933#XSLTH3135121122120121120120

It says this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remove Msocache Folder After Office Is Installed
After Office is installed you can use the Windows Cleanup Wizard to remove
the Msocache folder.

Note If you have more than one partition on your hard disk, you may have to
repeat these steps for each partition.

Warning Never delete the MSOCACHE folder by using Microsoft Windows
Explorer.

To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point
to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Select Drive dialog box, in the Drives list, click C:, and
then click OK.

Note If you have more than one hard disk, the Office setup files will
be on the partition that had the most free space during Office Setup.
3. Wait for Disk Cleanup to finish checking the drive.
4. In the Files to Delete list, click to select the Office Setup Files
check box, and then click OK.

Note If the size of the Office Setup Files is zero, the Office Setup
files are on another hard disk.
5. When you receive the following message, click Yes:
Are you sure you want to delete these files?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Would the same info apply to Office 2000?

Also this, a tool to move the MSOCache folder:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a3-695b-42c3-9045-b812ba0fed3e&displaylang=en

It also refers only to Office 2003, so it might not work for Office 2000.

Anyone have any add'l info here for Office 2000? In advance, thank you!

Hi John,

MSOCache does apply only to Office 2003 apps.
Check in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control
panel to see if there are any trial or full 2003
series MS Office family programs listed.

For Office 2000 the closest thing to that folder
would be if you copied your CD to the hard drive to
be able to reinstall, update or change features without
needing to have the CD handy.
