I bought two computers from Dell - one laptop and the other desktop.
Desktop machine comes with a copy of MS Office Home and Student 2007.
MS Office Home and Student 2007 is also installed on desktop.

Can I install MS Office Home and Student 2007 using CD and license key
supplied by Dell on my taptop also? What does EULA say in this regard?

If this CD is meant for installation on one computer only, I would
prefer to have MS Office Home and Student 2007 on laptop. Do I have to
tell Microsoft in this case?

Thanx/NSP

Office Home and Student can be installed on three systems. It is not for
commercial use, and it cannot be upgraded when future versions of Office are
released.

However, you need to read your EULA, because you may have an OEM (Original
Equipment Manufacturer) copy. This means you got a price break because you
bought the software from Dell and Dell installed Office on your computer.
What that also means is that the Office suite can only be installed on *that
specific computer.* When it dies, the Office license dies, too.

But I don't know what happens in the case of OEM Office Home and Student,
because (at least when you buy it retail as opposed to OEM) it's licensed to
be installed on 3 systems.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA102103171033.aspx has the
retail EULAs. But you need to read the one on your computer. You can find if
from any Office product, since you already have the Office applications
installed. Go to Office Button | <appliction> Options | Resources | About |
View License Terms.

As much as I see, it says one license on one device will be activated.

I want to remove it from desktop and install on laptop but it wouldn't
activate on laptop as it is already activated on desktop. Is it
possible to convice Microsoft that I don't need it on desktop but on
laptop and can they help deactivate the same on the desktop and
activate on the laptop?

Is this possible?

If you have an OEM version of Office, then the license is *forever* tied to
the the original machine upon which it was installed (in your case, the
desktop".

From the laptop, choose the option to activate by telephone -- the (free)
call to Microsoft will reveal the answer to all of your licensing questions.

Thanx. I called MS and they told me that it is valid on 3 different
computers. Activation on first computer can be done by Internet on
first one and on other two computers, it must be done by telephone.

Well, now I know. Just ran across this:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/fx101678741033.aspx

"Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 Retail License Terms allow for
installation on three devices. OEM License Terms limit the installation to
the device on which the software was pre-installed. Read the Microsoft
Software License Terms (MSLT) for the 2007 Microsoft Office system.

That last link directs me to the EULA, which I'd glanced through the other
day -- but I didn't realize the OEM info is indeed also included in it.
Here's the OEM-license-relevant part:

1. OVERVIEW. These license terms permit installation and use of one

copy of the software on one device, along with other rights, all as

described below.

2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. The software license is permanently

assigned to the device with which you acquired the software. That device

is the "licensed device." A hardware partition or blade is considered to

be a separate device.
