Need to take ownership of word document

S

SteveP

I need to take ownership of a Word document.

I have ent. admin. rights. have gone into security / advanced / ownership
and taken ownership and full control. I am now listed as the owner with full
permissions. I still can't modify the document.

I'm sure open to suggestions.

What happens when you try? Do you receive errors? Do you also have
ownership of the folder it is in? Is the File write protected?

S

SteveP

Everything seems to go properly. I am listed as owner with full permissions.
I also have full permissions on the folder. Every step matched with my 2003
server book. I even looked it up because I couldn't believe I still couldn't
edit the file. No errors haooened.

Is this issue with all files? Or does it work if copied locally? Are you
using a activated copy of Word?

S

SteveP

I have only needed to take ownership of the one file so it can be modified.
Haven't tried other files. I also copied it to my workststion and it didn't
work. Word is a valid copy. I'm stumped.

S

SteveP

No, it is not write protected. Read only is not checked. I quadruple check
permissions and I am suppossed to own it and I have full permissions.

I still can't modify it when I open it with Word.

Hi Steve,

What version of Word are you using, what are the exact steps you're using and what happens when you try to edit the document,
including any messages etc you get from Word?

The document could be protected as a form or have restricted rights, among other possibilities.

Dear Steve,

According to your description, my understanding of this issue is: you are
not able to edit a Word document.

If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

Based on my research, this behavior may occur due to a variety of factors.
To narrow down the issue, I recommend you perform the following steps:

Step 1 Check Word Protect Document feature
==========================
This issue may occur when you use Protect Document feature in Word. To
unprotect the document, please do as follows:
1. Open the Word document.
2. Click Tools->Unprotect Document.
3. Enter the password in the Unprotect Document dialog.

If you forget the password, we are not able to find the password for you.
This is out of our support boundary. In Microsoft Word, a
password-protected document cannot be recovered if the password for that
document is lost or forgotten. Microsoft does not offer a service to
retrieve documents to which passwords have been added, nor does it offer
any information about such services or processes. Microsoft support
professionals cannot assist, under any circumstances, in the breaking of
passwords applied to files and features within Microsoft programs. I
appreciate your kind understanding. For detailed information, please refer
to the following article:

Microsoft policy on forgotten passwords

KB290948 You cannot recover a document that is protected with a password
if the password is lost in Word 2002
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290948/en-us

For your information, I find a Word Password tool to query the password; I
list the URL as follows:

Step 2 Use Save As to save a new document to edit
=========================
Please use Save As to save a new document to edit as follows:

1. Open the problematic Word document.
2. Click File->Save As.
3. In the Save As dialog, enter the document name and click OK.
4. Open the newly saved document, can you edit the new document?

Step 3 Check share permission
=========================
If the document is in a share folder, please check the share permission of
the share folder as follows:
1. Right click the share folder, select Properties.
2. In the properties dialog, click the sharing tab, select Share this
folder, click the Permissions button.
3. In the Permissions dialog, grant full control to Everyone. Make sure
there is no deny permission for Everyone.
4. Check if this issue recurs.

Step 4 Check NTFS permission and Read-only
===========================
Please check the NTFS permission and Read-only as follows:
1. Right click the file in Windows Explorer, select Properties.
2. In the properties dialog, click the General tab, uncheck Read-only.
3. In the properties dialog, click the Security tab, make sure your user
account has full control permission and there is no deny permission.
4. Click Apply.

If the suggestions don't help, please help us collect more information for
further troubleshooting:
1. Does this issue happen to a specific Word document or all other file
types?
2. What is the version of Office and Windows? Have you activated Office? To
check if you have activated Office, click Help->Activate Product.
3. Are there any error messages when you try to edit the file? If so,
please capture a screenshot of the error message and send to me at
<[email protected]>. Please also provide me the exact steps to
reproduce the issue.
4. If possible, you can send the sample file to me so that I can check it
on my side.

Please try the suggestions and update me with the results at your earliest
convenience. We look forward to your reply.

In the end, thanks to Bob.

Alice Zhu
