Numbering documents

Each Word document that I create needs to have a sequential "reference number" printed in the upper right corner of the first page.

For example:

ref # 001 gets assigned to the first document
ref # 002 gets assigned to the second document
ref # 003 gets assigned to the third document
ref # 004 gets assigned to the fourth document
etc.

How do I do this?
