Does anyone know if the file formats in 2010 will be same as 2007 (docx etc.) ?

Also will the existing MS office compatibility pack provided backwards
compatibility to office 2003 and office xp from Office 2010 in addition to
2007 ?

Thanks

You will know the answer to both when Office 2010 is released to
manufacturing after its beta/RC runs.

Hhhmmmmm - I am trying to set budgets for 2010. Fully aware that office 2010
is available early next year, if MS are not publicising this kind of
fundamnetal information upfront how can they expect end users like myself to
understand the potential impact on us and hence budgetary implications in
advance.

Whilst I can kind of understand you saying wait for beta RC, surely someone
at Microsoft actually knows what Im asking as its a pretty basic and
fundamental question that could have impact all end user companies.

Question begs asking, What impact does file format of an unreleased
software have on budgets? If it is THAT critical, I would suggest
delaying rollout until January 2011.

In theory, yes. But until it gets closer to ship date, anything could change.
Features, file formats, the ship date itself.

They have a Technical Preview program that allows people in your position to
install and evaluate a beta version of Office, but you need to get in on it
fairly early in the process. It's closed now.

Probably so, subject to the caveat above. But you're not talking to Microsoft
here, just other Office users; Microsoft pays the rent on the place but it's
staffed by volunteers.

Well i can confirm that we haven't received any problems opening 2010 (CTP)
docs on a computer running Office 2003 using the 2007 compat pack.... so far.
Office 2007 hasn't needed compat packs for 2010, same formats so far as i can
see.

Beta gets released this month, so we'll see if anything else is new.
