On-going issue w/word 2000 and Vista home Premium

About a month ago, after working perfectly for over a year Word 2000 in
Office 2000 Pro stopped working.
I uninstalled, re-installed Office Pro several times, removed all the recent
updates from Windows Update, and
finally after many hours of trying all of the fixes I found in MS and on the
net and posting here and elsewhere, got Word to work (kinda).
1. I cannot open a word doc from windows explorer but all works when I open
the program 1st (many of the fixes for this issue revolve around Office 2007
and Windows7 not Office 2000 Professional and Vista
2. When I try to open Word, User Account Control says an unidentified
program wants access to my computer and the winword.exe is from an
unidentified publisher.
I tried uninstalling Avast and Comodo without success
Oh yes, the laptop came with a trial version of Office 2007 that I have
tried numerous times unsuccessfully to get rid of

I know Word works, but don't know what to do to fix these 2 issues-any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

1. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/reregisterword.htm. Or you could
try repairing the installation.

2. You probably have to log in as an Administrator in order to remove the
programs that you mentioned.

Note, however, that if Avast and Comodo are antivirus and/or firewall
programs, you may have to "enable" or "unblock" Word: Somewhere in those
programs you should see a list of programs. Make sure Word is in the list.

Hi Stefan
I registered word as the link offered, but that didn't change anything
Repairing the installation has not worked
I am the administrator so when I try to the small file ID's as 2007
Microsoft system, it should be removed but it's just too darn stubborn

Yes as much as I could figure out
I couldn't find word or excel anywhere in either program and since excel
works without a problem I figured all was Ok

To restore file associations, just right-click a Word file and choose Open
With | Choose Program. Pick Microsoft Office Word (use the Browse button if
Word isn't listed). Before clicking OK, select "Always use the selected
program to open this kind of file."

As I wrote, I'm not familiar with Avast and Comodo, so I can't suggest
anything more for those applications. :-( You could try looking at the web
sites.

Thanks for your responses
Open with didn't wok as Microsoft Word was already the suggested program and
when I selected it and tried to open the file I still got the error message
"Windows cannot find "C:\xxxxxxx.doc" make sure you typed the name correctly
and try again And this comes after
the error message from User account control that Microsoft is an
unidentified publisher.
I will go up on the Avast and Comodo sites and ask some questions, but if
they were at fault, would Word open by opening the program directly?

If it works when Word is open, why doesn't it work when Word isn't open?
(Opposite question but same answer.) Because some third party utility or
application is blocking the action. In this case it is either the firewall
or AV.

This is similar to what I suggested in a previous message (but I wasn't 100%
sure about the terminology).
