open email attachment

I have recieved an email message with an excel spreadsheet
attached. I can save the spreadsheet to my hard drive.
Everytime I try to do an open on the attachment I get a
Doctor Watson saying that "Excel.exe has created errors
and will be closed by windows".. Looking at Dr. Watson it
looks like code " c0000005 " access violation. I need to
open the attachment anyone know what is happening and how
I can fix?? I can create my own spreadsheets and save the
to "floppy" and open with no problem.
