Out of Memory in Excel?

I have a new MBP with 4Gb RAM installed. I tried to copy a worksheet with ~77143 cells and paste it in a new worksheet. I got an 'Out of memory" error. At first I thought it was because I had filtered out some rows and copying part of the sheet was causing problems. I tried copying the entire sheet but this didn't work either.

This is a surprise since the same action is trivial in PC Excel. Why is Mac Excel so memory hungry? This makes it completely unworkable for the sorts of things I need to do. Do I need to run Parallels and PC Excel?

"Out of Memory" is one of the most overused, non-specific & misleading error
messages ever constructed. It frequently has nothing ot do with RAM at all.

Make sure you have Office fully updated (12.1.5) as well as the same for OS
X (10.5.6). In fact I'd recommend going to the Apple site & getting the
10.5.6 Combo Updater. Repair Disk Permissions afterward & restart your Mac.
