Outline Codes vs Master Projects

I am looking to set up different views of projects and have dabbled with
Master Projects but have discovered that you cannot have more than one level
of sub projects :( This is a shame as I originally wanted to have a "Master
Project by Project" and "Master Project by Functional area" each sharing
several levels of sub projects.
On searching this forum it appears that I need to be using Outline Codes or
Enterprise Fields and/or to have locally saved Master Projects (not
published) to achieve this. The two sizeable books I have on PS2007 do not
provide much detail on this area and are contradictory, so I am looking for
advice/resources on best practice with some worked examples. Any suggestions?

Hi Mike.

you could use the Master project and custom fields in conjunction. ( That is
only with 2007). 2007 allows you to publish master projects, which are also
displayed in the Project Center. At the same time you have the abillity to
to associate Project Custom fields ( in 2003 they where outline codes) to a
Master Project. Each Master project can have subprojects, so that you can
also report against the custom fields.

I hope that makes sense :)
