Outlook 2007 frequent "not responding" caused by preview pane?!

I have a problem with outlook 2007 (on Windows 7) frequently hanging
for a few (say, 10) seconds at a time. After a lot of mucking around,
I've isolated this problem to the preview pane ie it doesn't happen
when I have the preview pane off.
Anyone else had a similar problem and solved it? I'd prefer to use the
preview pane!

Have you applied all updates to Outlook already?
Which mail account type are you using?

Can you repro this issue in Outlook Safe Mode?
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe
(note the space in the command)

You can turn on the Reading Pane then as well and see if it still occurs.

If it works now, your issue is most likely caused by an add-in.
Which add-ins do you have installed?

Disable them all and see if the issue still occurs. If not, you can enable
them one-by-one to find the culprit. For details see;

Thanks Robert,

According to Windows update there aren't any further updates available
for Outlook (or windows... I use auto update)
I'm connected to an exchange server. Interestingly, I have another
user account on the same machine which uses POP and I don't have any
problems with Outlook when using that account, only the exchange one.

I tried safe mode and once the reading pane is activated I get the
same problem... When the hangs occur, I can't detect any surge in CPU,
memory or network usage... perplexing and really annoying!

The machine is a Toshiba Satellite U500. I've disabled or uninstalled
most of the Toshiba rubbish other than device specific s/w.
